Find your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative here. Are you an Activist for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms? Do you consider yourself to be an active participant in this fight? Have you contacted your Congressmen today, this week, or have you yet to lift a finger? How many times have you written to your local newspaper to place an informational editorial, twice, four times, or a hundred? Or have you not even written to your local paper yet? As I have stated on my "Save The Guns" page, I am really fed up with gun owners who constantly complain to me that "how come this happened?" or "where was the NRA?". I ALWAYS reply to them and say, "where were you?" Well...when major gun control legislation was proposed in your State, did you contact every member on the committee that was reviewing and debating the proposed bill? Did you contact your State Senate and House legislative leaders. Do you even know who they are? Do they know who you are? Do you get my point yet? My point is that the Second Amendment Activist's job is never done. I used to contact everyone with my old typewriter and I used to have to change the ink every few months. Now I have the nearly unlimited power of the Internet and here on this page, I will provide you with all the very best links and e-mail addresses available to make your journey into Second Amendment activism as easy and painless as possible. As a responsible, concerned and thoughtful gun owner, your timely response to anti-gun editorials and articles is one of the most effective ways to sway public opinion to the side of truth. Public officials will scan the editorial pages of newspapers to gain insight on the will of the people regarding certain issues. Your letters and postcards do indeed carry weight and can influence public opinion and those of our elected officials. Truth is not a weapon that the anti-gun people can wield. The truth about lawful gun ownership and the Second Amendment is not on their side. Have you written an editorial before? Choose your own local newspaper first. Newspapers are more likely to run editorials from local residents than from residents in an area outside their normal delivery routes. Try to keep your letter between 100 and 250 words. An editorial too long will not be finished by most readers, especially if they don't agree with you. Most published letters are clear, concise, a few paragraphs long and are focused on a single subject. Keep your letter focused on a single topic and try not to ramble from subject to subject. Focus on a single proposed bill and state the bill number, that will usually get the readers attention. Plus stating the bill number lends some credence and weight to your letter. Most newspapers have a section set aside for readers letters. Write the name of this section on the outside of your envelope. It might get your letter into the paper a day earlier. Make sure your spelling and punctuation are flawless before sending it. If the newspaper staff has to rewrite your letter to make it readable, it will not be published. So do it right or don't do it at all. Many newspapers are accepting letters by E-mail. This makes sending out an editorial easier than ever. No excuses right? Be certain to sign your name, address and phone number. Most newspapers will contact you about your editorial before they publish it to confirm that you are the author and that you would like it published. Address your letter to the editor of newspaper and make sure it is typed or done on a word processor. Untidy handwritten letters will probably only get a passing glance by the editor's staff. Direct communication with your elected officials is the best way to affect legislative activities. Direct contact with your elected officials come in four different flavors. I have listed them here in order of importance.
When writing to your Congressmen, ALWAYS address it to: The Honorable Senator ______________ or The Honorable Representative _____________ You can write to their Washington D.C. offices and their own offices within your State. Always have your complete name and address on the letter and state that you are a constituent and that you would like a response in return. When writing, be clear, concise and try to give a bill number. The United States House of Representatives will have a Bill Number like this one: H.R. 1071 A United States Senate Bill will have a number that looks like this one: S. 1071 You should try to be relatively brief and focused on a single subject. My gut feeling is that a written letter carries more weight than a one minute E-mail. When writing to your United States Senator, use this address: "Honorable” (Name) When calling, call the following number and ask to be connected to your United States Senator's office. E-mail the House Democratic Leadership from here Writing the President Writing a letter to the President of the United States seems like a daunting task, but it need not be. The chances are great that the President will not personally read and handle your particular letter. Basically what you want your letter to do is to log your opinions so that they can influence public policy. If the letters the Office of the President receives are 500 to 1 in favor of a certain policy or Bill, chances are the President will act accordingly. The President likes to go with the polls. He wants to do what the majority seems to want. At least that is what it seems like to me. Always begin the letter with: Dear Mr. President, Don't address it Dear Bill or Dear George, or Dear Barack that is disrespectful. Again, be specific and don't ramble. Be focused on the task at hand and state Bill numbers if you know them. Always leave your complete name and address. For God's sake, don't be threatening in your tone, but rather be courteous and firm in your resolution. If you sound threatening or use threats in any way whatsoever to the President or to your Congressman, you will attract a whole bunch of trouble. You WILL get some undue attention from the authorities too. I fully realize that we all feel very strongly about these issues, but please, please, please use your heads when communicating them.
