What is Project Graduation?
Project Graduation is a program that was started at Oxford Hills High School in the 1979-1980 school years.  During the 1979 commencement period for high school graduations (May 15-June 30) in Maine, 7 of the 12 deaths among teenagers that resulted from driving under the influence of alcohol occurred in the area of Oxford Hills, Maine.

In response to this tragic loss of life, a school-community coalition from Oxford Hills developed and implemented a program called "Project Graduation," a chemical-free and alcohol-free graduation celebration, during the 1979-1980 school years.  During Oxford Hills' 1980 commencement period, there were no fatalities, no alcohol or drug-related injuries, and no arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Massabesic High School was the third school system in the country to adopt this special night of celebration for graduating high school seniors on graduation night.  The graduating seniors are given less than a half hour of time after the graduation ceremonies are over to get their clothes changed if they wish and say goodnight to family members.  They are then bused off to a facility where there will be an all-night celebration that is closely monitored by faculty and parents and one that is alcohol-free and substance free.

This year's Project Graduation for about 270 graduating high school seniors will feature lots of food, a magician, a hypnotist, a comedian from the Comedy Connection, raffle prizes, a karaoke machine, various games and sport activities, a penny auction and more.  About $8000 is prizes will be given away, every graduate will be leaving with some sort of prize or gift and the total cost of the night is expected to be somewhere between $16,000 and $17,000 as 70% to 85% of the Class of 2008 is expected to attend.

There are many ways you can donate to Project Graduation to give graduating seniors a night to remember and keep them and our streets safe during the high school graduation commencement period.

Make out a check payable to: “MHS Project Graduation” and have a trusted student drop it off at the Massabesic High School main office in an envelope marked “Project Graduation”.

Make a cash donation to any parent of a graduating senior who is collecting specifically for Project Graduation funding and you will be able to get a receipt.
