Welcome to this issue of the Minuteman Monthly Newsletter.
This is the monthly communication from my Web site at www.SaveTheGuns.com.
Thank you for reading this month's issue and for passing it on to a
friend.
I want to personally thank you for electing to receive this monthly
newsletter. More than ten thousand copies of this newsletter have
been sent out over the last seven years. Readers that have
forwarded the Minuteman Monthly Newsletter to others have
probably more than doubled that number. THANKS!
What is my biggest pet peeve when it comes to promoting gun safety,
firearm education and gun owner activism? What is the thing that
gets me furious at times? What is my biggest frustration?
What is it about this effort that makes me angry?

SaveTheGuns.com Gun Safety Tip of the Month
Even the most experienced firearm expert occasionally has a close
call when it comes to gun safety. If you shoot firearms as a
hobby, recreational activity or if you're a hunter who uses a firearm,
chances are good that at some point circumstances will arise that make
an accident with a firearm more likely.
You simply must make certain that all three rules of safe firearm
handling are observed. I have personally witnessed life-long
shooters make mistakes. But as long as the three basic rules of
safe gun handling are observed, the mistake will only result in
embarrassment and not tragedy.
Always point the gun in a safe direction.
Keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard
until you're ready to shoot.
Keep the gun unloaded and the action open if you're not prepared
to begin shooting.
Obviously the last rule does not apply if you have the gun ready for
purposes of self defense. If you're carrying a concealed firearm
in public, the gun should be loaded and ready to go.
Let me add one more rule if I might...
Always recheck the gun to see if it's loaded if it ever changes
hands from one person to another. Every time you pick up a gun,
check it. Even if you just checked it.

Item of the Month
The item of the month is going to be a new feature in the Minuteman
Monthly Newsletter. I hope you find it useful.
This gun safe is very similar to the one I have for myself. It
can be lag-bolted to both the floor and the wall studs. The lock
set is of the unpickable variety as well. I highly recommend this
safe for those who have to watch their weekly budget, but still want
something that will work.

Minuteman Monthly Newsletter Aiming Point
What is it about promoting gun safety, firearm education and gun
owner activism that gets me angry?
I'll tell you what it is. GUN OWNER APATHY AND
INEFFECTIVENESS.
There's approximately seventy five to eighty million gun owners
in the United States of America alone. That is about one quarter
of the entire population of this country. If
you were to compare the number of gun owners to the number of adults,
you would find that more than 40% of all legally qualified adults own at
least one gun.
It makes me furious to think that about 95% of the gun owners in the
United States are not NRA Members. That's
right! Only about 5% of America's gun owners are members of the
National Rifle Association. THAT'S DESPICABLE!
The number of gun owners in the U.S. who are members of other
pro-Second Amendment organizations are even fewer than that!
Perhaps as little as 2% of America's gun owners are members of other
pro-gun organizations like Gun Owners of America or others.
You know what gets my blood boiling? When a gun owner who has
never lifted a finger to defend their right to keep and bear arms,
points a critical and accusatory finger at the NRA and says that they're
not doing enough.
AMERICAN GUN OWNERS AREN'T DOING ENOUGH!!!
The National Rifle Association and other defenders of the Second
Amendment are doing what they can with very limited resources.
The other thing that rouses my wrath is gun owner ineffectiveness.
So many hundreds of thousands of active NRA Members sit at their gun
clubs over breakfast on Sunday mornings and complain about gun control
laws and anti-gun politicians over a cup of coffee and buttered toast
and they sit back and call that being active.
Complaining amongst ourselves with well spoken diatribes against gun
control accomplishes absolutely nothing!!!
I worked with a guy once who complained to me about how the
pro-Second Amendment organizations allowed the 1994 Clinton-Reno
Semi-Auto Ban to pass. This co-worker was not an NRA Member.
He was not a GOA Member either. He has never donated any of his
time or money toward protecting and defending our right to keep and bear
the arms of our choice.
NOTHING GETS ME RILED UP LIKE THAT!!!
How can you be a more effective pro-gunner?
- Write, call, fax and e-mail your elected officials at least a few
times a year. Especially if they're about to consider a
pro-gun or anti-gun bill.
- Send a non-active gun owner to my Web site and get them to join
the NRA here.
- If they're already voting pro-gun, then thank them. Don't
reserve your communications for when you disagree with your elected
officials.
- Don't complain about gun control laws over a cup of coffee with a
friend and call that being active. It's not. Merely
complaining about gun control among like minds is less than useless,
it's frankly pathetic. If all you do is chat about gun control
laws on a pro-gun message board or blog, then it's time to wake up
from your slumber.
- Meet gun control proposals with fierce and unrelenting
opposition. Call, fax, write and e-mail the authors and
co-sponsors of such legislation as well as your own Congressmen.
- Check out the under-utilized and not very well known Institute for
Legislative Action's Web site at the NRA http://www.NRA-ILA.org.
- Keep in mind that simply
being an NRA member, GOA member or contributor to pro-gun efforts is
not enough in my opinion. This battle is not as much about
firearms and target shooting itself as it is the freedom that an
armed citizenry protects. The freedom and liberty of future
generations of your family depends upon your actions today. If
you go about your pro-Second Amendment efforts with that level of
zeal and passion, we cannot help but win...

Readers of the NRA-ILA's Grassroots Alerts are no doubt familiar with the many features of NRA-ILA's website
www.NRAILA.org. But as a grassroots volunteer, do you know how to navigate within the website to find what you, as an activist, specifically need?
Here's a brief refresher on some of the many grassroots resources available to you at
www.NRAILA.org
Once on the home page, scroll about three-quarters of the way down and check out the "Grassroots Activism" section on the right hand side of the page.
This is where you find current information and programs provided by ILA's Grassroots Division.
Do you want to see if there are any gun-related businesses in your area that are serving as distribution centers for NRA-ILA materials?
Click on "Identify 'Second Amendment Activist Centers.'" Want to view video on some of the nation's leading Second Amendment scholars discussing issues of the day?
Check out the "2006 Firearms Law & The Second Amendment Symposium" link.
Interested in a catalogue of NRA-ILA Grassroots programs and resources? Then, you need to check out the "GR Resources Guide."
For additional grassroots tools, archived materials, and video, click on the "more" section and choose from the drop down box options.
Of course, you shouldn't just stop after you've utilized the materials housed in the "Grassroots Activism" section, as that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Across the top of the home page are a number of crimson-colored tabs.
The "Issues" tab houses ILA's fact sheets, and articles. Click the "Legislation" tab and then choose "Federal" or "State" for the most up-to-the-minute updates on NRA-ILA legislation.
Enjoy the "Armed Citizen" column in your NRA magazine? For an archive of these stories, choose "Armed Citizen." Need information on hunting?
Then check out the plethora of articles and information under the "Hunting" tab.
One of the most popular areas of the website is the "Gun Laws" section, where you can access information on state-specific and federal gun laws.
And of course, there are tabs to view an archive of your weekly "Grassroots Alert," and our "Take Action" section where you can find tools for identifying and contacting your lawmakers and area newspapers, television and radio stations.
These are just some of the many useful features that www.NRAILA.org
has to offer.
Our website provides one-stop-shopping for all of your activist needs.
The information posted at www.NRAILA.org
is constantly being updated, so please visit frequently, and use the aforementioned tools to enhance your level of activism in your community.
And don't forget to share this information with your family, friends, and fellow firearm owners as well!
Gun owners beware! If you want to complain
about how your firearm freedoms have diminished over the years, you
better be both active and effective
or you'll get me riled up.
Get active! If you're already
active that's great, then stay effective as well.
If
we are to defeat the current Democrat controlled Congress and their
incessant attacks upon our firearm liberties, American gun owners must
be both active and effective. Currently 95% of law-abiding
American gun owners are neither.
