"What do we have guns for?"

Firearms were invented sometime before the 1320's.  Long before Christopher Columbus came to America.  When guns were invented, nearly everyone in the world thought the world was flat as a pancake.

We have guns for many, many reasons:

We use guns for hunting.  We have been hunting for food since the beginning of time.  Hunting for food is a right of all human beings.  We have only not HAD TO HUNT for our food for the last 140 years or so.

We sometimes have to use guns for self-defense.  There are hundreds of thousands of bad people, who think nothing of hurting or killing someone to take their money, cars or belongings.  Each of us have a God-given human right to defend ourselves from criminals.  Protecting our families from criminals is a basic human right that existed before any form of government.  Guns are used for self-defense in the United States about six-thousand (6000) times a day.

We Americans are proud of our history.  God, guns and the courage to use them, made America a free country.  In the 1770's, Great Britain was the single most powerful country in the world.  And yet, they were defeated by the farmers, fisherman, clergy and freedom loving Citizens of Colonial America.  If the need to defend our freedom rises again, like it did in World War I and World War II, Americans will be ready to answer the call, with their guns in hand and courage and bravery in their heart.

We also collect firearms as a hobby, shoot them for recreation and family fun, target shoot in local, state, federal and international competition among other things.

If you were a bit more specific on your question and what you were looking for, I can help you further...

"I like exotic firearms. Such as Uzi, AK series and grenade launchers.  I never intend to kill anyone with my guns but stupid liberals think I kill a bus load of people daily.  They don't know me and are stupid.
Unfortunately I live in California where Gray "Hitler" Davis makes stupid laws that don't make sense. When I go to college I'm moving to Mississippi. Could you tell me what to do about the liberals and gun control. Guns are my life and I'll be damned if some idiot 500 miles north tell me I can't have my life."

When I was your age, I thought just as you do.  I have contacted many State Governors, including your Governor Davis.  I have found in my activism, that many elected officials who have anti-gun attitudes, actually have very little knowledge about firearms, when they were invented, what their capabilities are and what their limitations are.

Elected officials are greatly influenced by the newspapers and the electronic media.  Even though guns have been around since before Christopher Columbus came to America, tens of millions of people still know nothing about them except what they see in the movies.

Human Beings have always feared the unknown.  It is one of the reasons why the Human Race has survived.  Most anti-gun people, really know very little about them.  All they know is that they fear them out of their total lack of knowledge.

Firearm ownership is a very private matter and is not for everyone.  There is nothing wrong with enjoying the shooting sports, as long as they are enjoyed in a safe atmosphere.  I am not so sure about the "grenade launchers", but there is nothing wrong with enjoying a fine semi-automatic firearm.

There are really only two (2) avenues of approach when considering pro-gun activism:

1.)  Educate our elected officials about the failures of gun control measures to affect the criminal mind.  Tell them that the Second Amendment is not about the National Guard or hunting, rather it is about a free people's control over their own freedom and liberty.
Clearly, the Founding Fathers intended the Second Amendment as a final check on the scope of government power and control over its people.

2.)  If our elected officials refuse to listen to the truth about firearm ownership and the Second Amendment, we must act together to remove that individual from office!!!!  How can this be accomplished?  We can do many things to help remove an anti-gun elected official from office.

a.)  We can start a petition in that Congressman's district and send it to his/her office and try to get positive publicity about the petition in local papers.

b.)  We can join statewide pro-gun groups and national pro-gun groups that can concentrate more resources on removing anti-gun politicians from office.

c.)  We can write editorials to local papers, call in to radio talk shows and openly criticize the anti-gun politician in a public forum.

d.)  We can seek out people who would challenge anti-gun politicians for office and do our best to help them out in their campaigns.  We can help them by handing out flyers, holding signs at polling places, making phone calls, e-mail campaigns and many other ways.

e.)  We can make sure our local gun clubs are involved politically.  Many gun clubs are simply a place to shoot, when they could be a rich source of pro-gun activism.

"Would a pellet gun be a good starting gun?"

A pellet gun is a fine choice for a young child's first gun.  As long as the child takes the air gun very, very seriously.

A pellet gun or BB gun, should never be regarded as a toy.  All gun safety rules that apply to real firearms, also apply to air guns.

An air gun uses compressed air or Carbon Dioxide (CO2) to fire the "bullet", so they are not true firearms.  Nevertheless, air guns can permanently disable, injure or even kill someone else if they are mishandled.

To be a "true" firearm, the gun would have to use gun powder to fire the projectile.  Because air guns do not use gun powder, they are not real firearms, however, if they are misused or mishandled, they can be just as dangerous.

Air guns should be stored properly at all times, just like a real firearm.  They should not be used without competent supervision.

They should NEVER, EVER, be pointed at another person.

If the young child treats an air gun just like they would treat their first real firearm, the air gun is a great choice for a first gun.

The most important aspect of considering an air gun for a child's first gun, is that the child takes this purchase very seriously and is made to treat the air gun like a real gun should be treated.

Great question!!!

"What is the first gun ever invented?  Who invented it?"

Great question from a nine year old girl.  This question has been asked many times.  I get this question at least once a week.

The when, where and who of the very first firearm is very much a gray area.  Nobody is completely certain about the origin and inventor of the very first firearm.

The inventor of the very first firearm was never recorded, or the record has been lost.  The year the firearm was first invented was not recorded either and is also not conclusively known.

It was so long ago, that comprehensive records were not made or kept.  It is possible that if there were any records made of the inventor, they may have been lost or destroyed.

There are only a few things that we have to go on and here they are:

The actual individual inventor of gun powder could have been a Chinese alchemist known as Sun-Sy-Miao.  It wasn't until the year 904, that there was documentation of an approximate recipe for gun powder by a man from China named Siui-Tung.  They used gun powder in their celebrations and military victory parties and as an incendiary device that could be mounted on arrows to start fires.  In the year 1067, production of gun powder was put under the control of the Emperor of China.

Gun powder was described in a book called Liber Ignum which means "Book of Fires" around the year 1225.  In the year 1248 an English monk named Roger Bacon published a formula for gunpowder.

Roger Bacon was known to have experimented with gunpowder in Europe between 1240 and 1270.  Two of the three main ingredients of gun powder were known as "Chinese Salt" and "Chinese Snow", lending convincing credence to the notion that gun powder was invented in China.  Today, we know the three ingredients of gunpowder as saltpeter, sulphur and charcoal.

It was recorded that in the year 1259, the city of Melilla defended itself against attack with a cannon.

Evidence has shown that the first guns began appearing around the year 1280.  The original inventor was either never recorded or has since been lost in time.

In 1326 A.D., there was a decree in Florence, Italy for men to make iron bullets and cannon.  Other documents from 1326 mention payments for gun powder, shot and cannon.

In 1345 A.D. there were British records for the repairs of guns that fired both arrows and pellets.  One year later in 1346, records have been found of a shipment of guns from London, England to France.

The first mention of the term "Handgonne" (handgun) came in 1388.  Before that, they were known as "Hand Cannons", and were "set off" by hot coals or burning embers.  Quite likely, the first gun was known as a hand cannon.

So to recap what we know, the first gun was probably invented around the year 1280 and the inventor is not known, but may well have been a man from China, but possibly Europe.

Nobody knows exactly what the first gun invented looks like, but it was more than likely a wooden pole, with a metal tube attached to it.  Below is an example of a gun made in the late 1300's, but this is not the first gun made.  A photo of the first gun made would be virtually impossible to find.

14th Century Hand Cannon (Inventor Unknown)

In the year 2000, a few firearms were discovered buried near the Tongjimen area of Nanjing in China.  According to the markings, they were made in the year 1373.  These are among the earliest firearms found, but because they were so well made, it is obvious that they had been making them for quite a while.

"What do you do if your friend makes you mad and you threaten him with a bb gun?"

This question is a very difficult one to answer.  Losing your temper and threatening anyone with a gun, pellet gun or real firearm is an extremely serious matter and is an unlawful criminal act.

You had many options available to you for resolving your disagreement with your friend and under no circumstances was it warranted to threaten him with a bb gun.  It was very wrong to use a bb gun to try to get your friend to take you seriously.

When we are angry with a friend or playmate, making certain that they know exactly how you feel is very, very important.

Most times when we have an argument with a friend that escalates to losing one's temper, the friend doesn't completely understand how you feel inside.

Calmly talking out your conflict with your friend and trying to view things from his position and working out a compromise is the best way to resolve a conflict.

There is never any excuse to use a bb gun or firearm to resolve your conflict.  Using one in order to help solve a conflict will only bring on more serious problems that I am sure you never bargained for.

Bringing a bb gun or other weapon into the equation will NOT solve the problem, but rather will make the problem worse.

Even walking away from the argument and addressing the problem later would have been a much better solution.

Please take a look at the following tips for peaceful conflict resolution:

  • Talk calmly and try to resolve your conflict through meaningful conversation.

  • Try to view the problem from the other person's position.

  • Bring in a third or fourth person into the conversation to help you both come to a resolution.

  • A thoroughly thought out compromise will solve many arguments.  Negotiating a middle ground is one of the answers to conflict resolution.

  • Walk away from the person you are having the conflict with before it escalates into a physical confrontation.  It would be much better to resolve the argument later than to let it grow into a physical confrontation.

A BB GUN SHOULD ALWAYS BE TREATED LIKE A REAL FIREARM IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES.

Who invented the pellet gun?

The air gun's history is as clouded and obscure as the history of real firearms are.  Like real firearms, the original inventor is unknown.

Because airguns were invented so long ago, the records of the invention were not properly documented, or the records have not lasted through the ages.

However, there are a few things we do know about them:

  • An Egyptian known as Kleisbos of Alexandria experimented with shooting things from a tube with compressed air, in about the third century B.C..  That was about twenty three hundred (2300) years ago!!!!!

  • Airguns were well known by the early 1500's and Leonardo Da Vinci even mentioned them in some of his writings.

  • In 1780, we know that the country of Austria were using some types of airguns for their armed forces and some models of airguns were thought to be nearly equal to the black powder muzzle loaders of the day.

Great question!!  Thanks for visiting and thanks for telling your friends about this gun safety and education page for kids!!!

My address is **** **** ******* *** ******* ** *****, I was wondering if your parents own a gun should they keep it up away from kids and if they don't should they get in trouble?  Because my friend *** ****** had a gun, he was home alone and he committed suicide.  How he got the gun was not his parent's fault or anything but if it was theirs should they have kept it out of sight and reach?

Thanks for visiting my "For Kids Only" page and thanks for your question.

First, let me start off by saying something very straightforward and very important to you.  You should NEVER EVER, EVER send someone your address through the Internet, unless you have your parent's permission and the giving the address is necessary for making a purchase or something like that.

The Internet is becoming an extremely dangerous place as more and more bad people are finding ways to take advantage of young children.  Your personal safety might be at risk.

Now to address your question:

I am very sorry to here that your friend died.  I really mean that.  Young people are the very future of this world and I am very saddened when I hear that a child has lost his/her life and their ability to affect the future.

Today's children have the power to affect the course of the future of the world and to have a young child take their own life, is such a terrible waste that it makes me very, very sad.

To address the firearm part of your question, I have stated in more than one place on this Web site, that a parent or guardian who is a gun owner and is merely hiding a loaded gun in their home is sending out an invitation to disaster, whether it is an unintentional accident or whether it offers access to a gun for young child who might be having suicidal thoughts.

Guns in the home should never be kept loaded and hidden away!!!  I cannot stress this enough.  Simply hiding loaded guns in the home is not the way to go.  However, a troubled young child who might be having suicidal thoughts, could go to such great lengths of effort that no safety measures will work.

For parents who choose to keep a gun in the home for home protection and defense, there are many options available to keep the firearm quickly accessible, while making them inaccessible to unauthorized people.

There are options available like quick access handgun safes that are able to read fingerprints and will open only for certain authorized individuals.  There are also trigger locking devices that can be opened quickly with a key.

As far as punishing parents, who don't take these basic safety measures seriously... I don't think anyone should be punished for not locking up all their firearms.

Many times, laws that make people lock up all their guns, make those guns inaccessible for self defense.  It should therefore be a very personal decision for everybody.

Police officers who live by themselves and grandparents with 25 grandchildren would have two very different concerns with firearm storage.  There is no way that a good law can be made that would be best for each situation.

I think it is a freedom of choice issue that each person has to decide for themselves.  I am sure that the parents of your friend would have chosen my advice, if they were able to turn back the clock.

However, the right for law-abiding Citizens to own the firearm of their choice is indeed a natural right and has been part of the United States Constitution since 1791.

We all should be on the lookout for troubled children and should offer our assistance whenever appropriate.  Even if it is only to listen to somebody's personal problems and simply offer advice and support.

Again, I am sorry that your friend is gone.  Maybe someone else will read this story and change the way they are thinking.  The future of the world is far too important to throw away.  There nothing that I know of that can be more painful for a parent than burying a child.

If any child is reading this and has had suicidal thoughts, please seek out someone professional to talk to.  If you can't talk to your parents, please find someone at school like a Guidance Counselor to direct you in the right direction.  Your life is far too precious to waste.  Believe me, you have much more to offer the world than you ever thought possible.

God Himself came to Earth in the life of Jesus Christ and sacrificed Himself to save your life.  That is how important you are!!!

God Bless You!!!

I'm working on a community project for my FCCLA Chapter and I was wondering if you could help me and my friends with it.  We are working with K-4th graders on gun safety. It would really be a lot of help if you could, thank you.

I will be more than happy to help.  Anything specific I can do???

My "For Kids Only" page, "Safety Pact" page "Safety Rules" page and "Kids Test" pages are pretty good, I think.  You may certainly print out my "Safety Pact" page and freely distribute them.

In my opinion children from 5 to 11 years old, should be taught what to do if they find a gun somewhere unattended.

Whether it is found in a friend's home or at a playground or somewhere else... children should be taught that they should:

* Not touch the gun

* Leave the area where the gun is

* Tell a responsible adult where the gun was found

Like I say on my "For Kids Only" page, if the gun was found outside, it could have been used in a crime and then abandoned.  Touching or handling the gun not only is dangerous without proper knowledge, but certain evidence could be destroyed that might thwart the prosecution of the criminal who abandoned it.  Evidence such as blood, tissue, DNA, footprints and of course fingerprints could be destroyed by a child handling the gun and being in the area in which it was found.

Not to mention the fact that the firearm is likely still loaded and ready to be fired.

Children as young as 4 or 5 years old can absorb this very basic gun safety message of three steps.  It is important that the three steps outlined above and on my Web site be repeated over and over.  Children from 4 to 11 learn best through relentless repetition.  Don't feel awkward about having them repeat this message even as many as ten times or more.  That is the best way to imprint this important message on their brains.

The three basic gun safety rules for children outlined above are part of the Eddie Eagle gun safety program for children that was developed and implemented by the National Rifle Association.  It doesn't matter what people in your community think about the NRA, they are the number one leader in gun safety education hands down.  There is a link to the Eddie Eagle home page on my "For Kids Only" page.

If you use any of my information or forms, please include my Web site in your materials.  As long as you mention http://www.SaveTheGuns.com somewhere in your presentation, you are free to use all of my brain for your project.

I think it would also be important in your FCCLA Project to make mention that accidental deaths among children are the lowest that they have ever been in history.  And that is precisely because of efforts like those from the National Rifle Association, groups like mine and concerned people like yourself.

Good Luck,

If I can be any more help, let me know.

"To preserve liberty it is essential that

 Richard Henry Lee,

 Additional Letters From The
 Federal Farmer, 1788

"My 9 year old friend owns an air gun that shoots plastic bb's.  We live in the city. My mom said that it is against the law to shoot it in the city.  Even inside a house.  Is this true?  Is a 9 year old allowed to operate an air gun?  If so, with or without the presence of an adult?"

There is an enormous amount of laws in the United States that regulate firearm ownership and usage. There are approximately 25,000 local, state and federal laws that regulate this type of thing.

However, an air gun that shoots plastic pellets may not fall under the same laws that regulate real firearms.

It is possible that there is a city ordinance where you live that forbids firing an air gun within the city limits. If your Mom believes that such a city ordinance exists, I would have no reason not to believe her. Your Mom has your best interests at heart and is trying to do what she thinks is best for you. If I were you, I would take her at her word on this one.

Firing an air gun inside a house can be a very dangerous thing to do. The risk involved is in ricochets. The pellet could bounce off the floor, wall and possibly something else and come back and hit you or your friends.

However, there are air gun target traps available that allow the safe shooting of an air gun indoors. The trap is designed so that the bb or pellet will not exit the trap. These are usually available for purchase for under $30.00 or so.

As far as nine (9) year olds shooting air guns, they really should have competent adult supervision, although in most places, it is not required. Air guns usually fire a small lead pellet or copper bb at over 700 feet per second. Sometimes even faster than that if the air gun uses Carbon Dioxide (CO2) to fire the pellet.

In my experience, kids who are shooting air guns without adults around tend to "show off" with it and do things that they would not normally do if there was an adult around. It is a VERY GOOD IDEA to have an adult around so that the situation never gets unsafe.

It is absolutely essential that all gun safety rules that apply to real guns are also observed when using air guns.

There are three (3) basic rules of safe gun handling.

1.) ALWAYS POINT THE GUN IN A SAFE DIRECTION. Air guns and real guns should never be pointed at someone or something that you don't intend to shoot at.

2.) ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FINGER AWAY FROM THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO SHOOT. There is a natural tendency to place your finger inside the trigger guard and onto the trigger itself. This must be avoided!!! The only reason that your finger should be on the trigger is when you are safely aiming at your target and you're ready to shoot.

3.) ALWAYS KEEP THE GUN UNLOADED AND THE ACTION OPEN UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO USE IT. The gun should not be loaded until you are ready to use it. The bolt on the side of the gun should be open if you are not in the process of shooting.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please find time to send other children, including your friends to my gun safety page for kids.

"How many people get killed by a gun?"

Well, here is the truth of the matter. Guns don't kill anybody.  A firearm is simply a tool and just like any other household tool, it can be misused.

Sometimes, violent felons, gang members, drug dealers and suppliers, rapists and serial killers, illegally obtain and use firearms to kill people with.

If you meant to ask, how many Americans are killed each year, by violent felons who choose to illegally use a firearm to assault someone, then the latest statistics I have seen from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and their comprehensive yearly study called the Uniform Crime Report (UCR), was 8,259 per year.

8,259 people were killed because of the illegal, immoral, uncivil and unlawful use of a firearm to commit murder.

Now, on the other hand, one might ask, how many lives were saved and protected through the legal use of self-defense using guns, the number would have to be somewhere between one and a half million and two million lives (1,500,000 and 2,000,000).

Some university studies have estimated the number of self-defense uses of guns to be even higher, approaching 2,500,000.

I hope I answered your question!!!
Please remember that a gun will only do what a person makes it do. It cannot do anything all by itself. That distinction is very important.

What government really needs to do is to punish felons when they choose a gun to commit a crime with. Regulating people who own guns and obey the law, does absolutely nothing to affect crime rates.

Great Question

"What happened on April 19, 1775 in history?"

What a great question.

The answer is long and very involved, which I really don't have the time or the space to expand upon, however, I will do my best to give you a brief synopsis.

On the evening of April 18, 1775 it was decided that Paul Revere, William Dawes and Samuel Prescott would sound the alarm that the British Army was sending 800 troops to Concord in order to raid an ammunition depot that was stored there by the Provincial Congress.  The raiding of these munitions would render the entire Massachusetts Militia useless.

The attempt to notify the Militia by Revere, Dawes and Prescott was successful, although it did not work exactly as planned.  The Massachusetts Militia was alerted and on April 19, 1775, they met the 800 British Troops at Lexington and Concord.

Captain John Parker who was in command of the small Massachusetts Militia contingent said "Don't fire unless fired upon."  Later he then said "But if they want a war, let it begin here."

Major Pitcairn who was in command of the British contingent demanded that the assembled colonial Minutemen "...lay down your arms and disperse...".

Soon after, a shot rang out, which is known as the "shot heard round the world", and then the Revolutionary War was to follow over the next few years.

The British were beaten badly by hundreds of Militiamen who were really farmers, ministers, doctors and men of every walk of life, who were tired of being mistreated by the most powerful country in the world at the time, which was Great Britain and its king, King George III.  The British then were in a full retreat all the way back to Boston.

How old do you have to be to own a bb gun?

Well, this question seems a lot easier to answer than it actually is.

A bb gun is not a real firearm, it is operated by gas (CO2) or by compressed air.  Although a bb gun can be just as dangerous as a real firearm if they are mishandled, they are not "true" firearms.  Real firearms use ammunition cartridges with gun powder to fire the projectile down the barrel.  Many times on this Web site I mention that bb guns should always be treated as if they are real guns.  BB guns can fire a projectile just as large and just as fast as some real firearms, so safety is always the top concern.  Please see my answer to another child's question.

They do not fall under the regulations of real guns, however, there are thousands of state and local laws and ordinances around the nation that regulate how, when, where and by whom, bb guns can be owned and operated.

In some areas, you must be at least 16 years old and in others there are no regulations at all.  Your best bet would be to have a parent contact your local police department's business number and ask them to clarify the current law for you.

It would be very irresponsible of me to say what I think the law might be, because it would be merely a guess at best.

I do know that there are more than 25,000 federal, state and local laws and ordinances that regulate the ownership and transportation of real firearms.

Many states have left bb gun and air gun issues alone, while some states are treating bb guns as if they were real rifles.

I wish I could help you out more with this question.  The best thing to do is to contact your local law enforcement agency's business number and simply ask for a clarification on the current regulations.

I am doing a project on weapons (guns).  I have looked everywhere!!!!!! for information like:
1. Who invented guns?
2. Where was the first gun made? (USA? Australia?)
3.What color was the first gun?
4.Why were guns invented?
5.Why were gun license made?
I have looked everywhere!!!!! for answers for these questions Mum, Dad and I have looked.

Can you send me some information as it will help me heaps?

I would be happy to help you write your project and possibly get the truth out about guns and their origins.

I will try to address each of your questions in order:

1. Who invented guns?

The first gun was invented so long ago that no records of the inventor have been found.  Originally the Chinese were firing rocks from out of bamboo poles around the year 1270 A.D. or so.  The Chinese invented gun powder about 300 years or so before that, just after the year 900 A.D.  Most of these records, either never existed or have been destroyed over the last 1100 years or so.

The first documented purchase of bullets and gun powder was in the year 1326 A.D.  It was a decree made by the Council of Florence, Italy, that appointed men to make iron bullets and cannon.  Other documents in 1326 show payments for cannon, gunpowder and iron shot (bullets).

The term "handgun" was first used in the year 1388.  The first semi-automatic rifle was made in the year 1890 and the first semi-automatic handgun was made in the year 1895.

So you see, guns are not a new thing to human civilization... they have been around to some degree for the last 700 years or so.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Where was the first gun made? (USA? Australia?)

It is not known exactly where the first gun was made, but it was probably in China around the year 1300.  Soon after the year 1300, guns and cannon came to the developed countries of Europe.  America and Australia were largely uninhabited when guns were made.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

3.What color was the first gun?

The first gun did not exactly have a color, so to speak.  It was a handheld device called a "handcannon" and was probably all made of iron.  Later, in the early 14th century, they began making them of wood and metal, there were no added colors...

--------------------------------------------------------------------

4.Why were guns invented?

Guns were probably first invented as a self-defense tool and an instrument for war.  Of course they were also used for hunting animals, because in the 1300's, you could not shop at a grocery store for meat.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

5.Why were gun licenses made?

This is a very interesting question.  I am not certain on this, but I think the first license to own firearms was probably made in Great Britain (England).

I imagine that the idea behind it was and still is, not very well thought out.  You see, if a violent criminal is going to misuse a firearm to commit crime or to hurt someone, they are not going to get a gun license for the gun first.

Any criminal who commits crime on a regular basis does not concern themselves with obtaining a gun license.  They never have and never will.

Violent criminals already are committing crimes that are much more serious than a gun license or firearm registration laws, so they never bother with them.

Only those good and law abiding people, who behave themselves, bother to obtain a gun permit or license.  But, I think the original thought behind the gun license or permit being invented is because the number of people owning firearms is in the hundreds of millions and the governments of Great Britain, United States and Australia, wanted more control and documentation over who has firearms.

The governments, in an effort to protect their citizens wanted to make sure that no guns were being sold at a retail store level, to people who have a record of criminal history.  They also wanted to make certain that nobody who was mentally disturbed or psychotic, could go to a store and buy a gun.

The last reason, that governments have devised a gun license is that they have a record of who owns what type of firearm and where they live, just in case they decide to take them all away at some future date.

Unfortunately, all this does is it disarms those good people who have obeyed the law, while the violent criminal continues to buy their guns unlawfully and illegally.

I hope I took the time to answer your questions completely, I was happy to help you out with your project.

"Is it safe to leave bullets laying around where small kids can get to them and play with them?"

Before I begin my answer to your question, let me begin with a little more information on what ammunition is.

Firearm ammunition are called cartridges.  Cartridges are composed of four (4) different parts:

The Brass Case
The Lead Bullet
The Gunpowder
The Primer

Cartridges have been around since the Civil War Era.  That was about 140 years ago.

_________________________________________
_________________________________________

Cartridges or ammunition should never be left out where young children can get to them.  However, cartridges by themselves are not dangerous.

The danger involved in children having access to ammunition is if they bang on them with a hard object, like a rock or hammer, or if they squeeze them with a pair of pliers.

If someone squeezes or pounds on a cartridge, it could set off the primer, which would ignite the gunpowder that is inside the case.

There are many dangers involved if a cartridge is fired outside a gun.

1.)  The hot burning gunpowder can get into your eyes and damage your eyesight.

2.)  Pieces of the brass case or lead bullet may also damage your eyes, face or skin.

3.)  The bullet may shoot out of the case and injure you, or others that may be nearby.

__________________________________________
__________________________________________

Ammunition should always be stored in a cool and dry area, separate from where the firearms are stored.  They should be stored in such a manner that the ammunition is not accessible to young children or unauthorized adults.

To restate my answer; ammunition is not dangerous all by itself.  But a young child, pounding on, or squeezing them is dangerous.  And they should be stored properly to avoid a young child having access to them.

"What should you do when someone at a shooting range offers you to use his gun and you have never used a gun?"

That is a great question and I am glad you took the time to send it to me.

There are a few things I would like to tell you about being in this situation.  I was about your age, around 9 years old, when I shot my first gun.  I was assured by my Dad, that as long as I obeyed the three (3) basic rules of safe gun handling and didn't drop the gun on my toes, that I was not going to get hurt, or hurt anyone else.

My son, shot his first gun by the time he was five (5) years old.  Very quickly, he learned the three basic rules of safe gun handling, and he soon was loading and unloading guns all by himself, with my supervision of course.

First, let me reassure you, that as long as you handle the gun correctly and follow the rules, shooting guns is fun and very safe.  Shooting guns is actually one of the safest sports known.  Many more people get hurt playing golf, swimming or playing baseball than shooting guns.

#####################################
The Three Basic Rules of Safe Gun Handling

ALWAYS point the barrel of the gun in a safe direction.  At the range, this would be always toward where the targets are, or what the pros call "downrange".  There is no reason that the barrel should ever be pointed to the side, or back toward you at any time.  If you're not at the range, a safe direction is usually at the ground.

ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger unless you are ready to shoot at the targets.  There is a natural tendency for someone to put their finger on the trigger whenever they pick up a gun.  This must be resisted.  You have to condition yourself to place your trigger finger alongside the gun, on the frame, outside the trigger guard, whenever handling a gun.

ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded and the action open, unless you are getting ready to begin shooting.  A loaded gun left laying on the shooting bench, is a mistake and should be avoided.  Never load a gun, unless you are about to get ready to use it.  The "action" is all the moving parts that allow the loading and unloading of the gun.

#####################################

There is nothing to fear about guns, as long as they are handled properly and correctly and the three rules above are always followed.  All firearms deserve respect, but please do not be afraid of them, but rather just follow the rules.  Guns can be very dangerous, but only if they are mishandled.  Unfortunately, television and movies always show guns being mishandled, please never handle guns like they show on T.V. and in the movies.

For your first time shooting a gun, I would advise that you begin by shooting a single shot .22 caliber rifle.  Don't let someone give you a powerful centerfire handgun like a .357 magnum for your first shots, this is a mistake.  You should start small and start with a rifle, then gradually work your way up to other guns as you get used to obeying the rules all the time and get more experience.

When handling a strange gun for the very first time, make sure you ask all the questions you have.  Don't allow yourself to start shooting, unless all your questions have been answered and you are completely comfortable with the process.

Shooting a gun is a very serious matter.  If your parents have allowed you to begin learning about this very important process, they already have confidence in your ability to follow the three basic rules of safe gun handling listed above.  The first few times you shoot, you should concentrate on following the three basic rules, until you know them so well that you automatically do them all the time.  Make sure you always shoot with adult supervision, until you get to be much older.  Always wear protection for your eyes and ears when shooting.  Another important thing I would like to say is.... HAVE FUN AND BE SAFE.

"I need to know how a gun works for a school project."

I want to thank you for visiting my "For Kids Only" page.  You are one of about 12,000 kids that have seen my gun safety and education page for kids.

The first gun was invented at the very beginning of the 1300's.  The gun made its first documented appearance in Europe in about the year 1326.  The first gun was probably invented in China quite a few years earlier, but the inventor and the year were never recorded as far as we know.

A gun is simply a device that stores, helps to aim and fires something called ammunition.  The gun generally works the same way today as it did way back almost 700 years ago.

In order to understand how a gun works, there are basically two things that you must concentrate upon.

1.)  Ammunition Knowledge

2.)  The Ammunition Firing Sequence

First, let me tell you about what ammunition is.  Modern ammunition consists of four (4) separate components.  A completed set of these ammunition components is called a "Cartridge".

a.)  The Case
b.)  The Bullet
c.)  The Gunpowder
d.)  The Primer

The "Case" is the metal container in which all other three ammunition components are inserted.

The "Bullet" is a small piece of lead, about the size of a pencil eraser, and it is inserted in the top of the case.

The "Gunpowder" is made of nitroglycerin and/or nitrocellulose and gets poured into the case.

The "Primer" is a very small device inserted in the bottom of the case, that is designed to burn up the powder that is inside the case.

#########################################

Ammunition Firing Sequence

When the trigger of the gun is pulled, the firing pin inside the gun strikes the back of the cartridge where the "Primer" is located.

The "Primer" then detonates inside the case and ignites the "Gunpowder".

The "Gunpowder" then burns up almost instantly and creates a very large and very hot amount of rapidly expanding gas.

This heated and rapidly expanding gas builds up inside the "Case" with enough pressure to push the "Bullet" out of the case and all the way down and out the end of the barrel at very high speed.

#########################################

That is generally how a gun works.  There are many different types of firearms and most of them operate a bit differently with respect to loading and unloading procedures, and I won't attempt to cover that here is this e-mail.  However, if you visit http://www.SaveTheGuns.com/firearms_101.htm, there is a short explanation on loading and unloading procedures.

Good luck on your school project and I hope you do quite well on it.  I know your teachers will be impressed with your work.

What types of guns are there?

There are three main types of guns.

  • Shotguns

  • Rifles

  • Handguns

The oldest type of firearm was probably similar to a shotgun.  It normally will shoot multiple pellets of lead or steel and is mostly used for hunting purposes.

The rifle normally shoots a single bullet and is intended to shoot mainly at distant targets.  A rifle has grooves inside the barrel which spin a bullet as it travels toward its target, much like a quarterback spins a football to make sure it flies straight.

The handgun was first invented in the 1300's.  The term "handgun" was first documented in the year 1388, before that, they were known as "hand cannons".  The semi-automatic handgun was first invented in the year 1895.

What types of guns are legal or illegal?

That is not an easy question to answer.  The reply below, is long and involved.

There are more than 23,000 laws in the United States alone that regulate firearm ownership, sales, transfer, transportation and use.

Each nation around the world, also has tens of thousands of laws, regulations and ordinances regarding firearms and their legality.

Assuming that you are speaking more specifically about firearms in the United States, I have a few things to say here that might help you get a better grasp upon what is legal or illegal and heavily regulated.

Each of the fifty states in the United States has implemented their own laws that regulate gun possession, transportation and sales.

In some states, machine guns are legal and in others, they are not legal.  Machine guns are fully automatic and can fire continuously with the trigger held in.

In some states, silencers, that are designed to muffle the sound of a firearm are perfectly legal, but in other states, they have been banned.

In most states, semi-automatic rifles are perfectly legal to purchase and own, but in others, especially California, some models of firearms are not available for lawful sale.  However, magazine size has been limited to 10 rounds.

There is even a town called Morton Grove, Illinois, that does not allow any of its Citizens to own any type of firearm.  In addition to that, there is a town called Kennesaw, Georgia that has made a rule that every household in the town MUST have at least one gun in the house.  It is interesting to note that the town in Georgia that requires gun ownership, has less crime per person, than the town in Illinois that prohibits all firearms.

There are some laws that affect gun possession that are federal laws and apply evenly to all states.  Such a law is the National Firearm Act of 1934.  This act, made short barreled shotguns, with barrels under 18", illegal.  Two more of these federal laws are the Gun Control Act of 1968 and the Brady Law.

The National Firearm Act of 1934, also heavily regulated fully automatic machine guns.  A federal permit, federal tax and approval from the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, must be obtained and/or paid.

So, to recap and summarize my answer to your question:

1.)  Each State in the United States has regulated firearm possession in one way or another and none of them have done exactly the same thing.

2.)  There are thousands of federal regulations also, but they mostly restrict, tax or regulate the sale of guns, but do not make them legal or illegal.

3.)  Some states have made machine guns and silencers illegal, while others simply want machine gun owners to get an additional license, permit or permission.

Firearms cannot really be made illegal, because of the Second Amendment that you find in the Bill of Rights.  There are quite a few states in the United States, along with the federal government itself that has regulated firearm possession to the point of actual violation of the United States Constitution.  The United States Supreme Court has never conclusively ruled on how much power the individual states have to make laws concerning gun ownership.

I hope I have cleared up a few things for you.  And I hope I did not confuse you with my explanation.  Your question was unfortunately too general for a quick answer.

Again, I want to thank you for visiting and hope you stay safe.

Should the parents do the time if the kids did the crime?

Interesting question, please allow me to say what I think on this topic.

The central thing we need to really focus upon, when trying to determine punishment for a crime is responsibility.

RESPONSIBILITY for a crime should always be the determining factor when asking who should be punished for a crime.

It is always the parent's responsibility to make certain that their children know the difference between right and wrong and between what is moral, upstanding and honest, and what is immoral, evil and deceitful.

It is the parent's job and more specifically the father's job to make absolutely certain that his children conduct their lives within the framework of morality and religion.  If the child is compelled by the parents to conduct their lives properly while they are young, then the child will develop a good, sound and upright character when they get older.

However, if when the child gets older, they choose of their own free will to commit crime, use drugs or do immoral and illegal things, it would be unfair and unjust to hold the parents responsible for the immoral, illegal and uncivil conduct of their children.

The rates of crime among very young children have been climbing pretty steadily over the last few decades.  It is very disturbing to me, when I see very young teenagers who are so far out of control, that it would take something as drastic as military boot camp to straighten their lives out.

The answer to your question is an emphatic NO.  The parents of a misbehaving child should never be held legally and/or criminally responsible for the immoral and illegal conduct of their children.  The parents must be responsible enough to carefully teach their children how to properly conduct their lives, but it is completely up to the child on what they do with that information.

Thank you for visiting and thanks for your question.

"What kind of guns were there in the year 1870?"

Many of the modern firearm manufacturers were already in business at that time. During the Civil War, just 5 years before, there was a great interest in making better, more accurate, faster firing and more reliable firearms.

The modern era of metallic cartridge guns was being born at that time. American companies like Colt, Smith & Wesson, J. Stevens, Winchester and Iver Johnson were already making firearms. The first manually operated machine gun was used in 1864 and it was called the Gatling.

Many of these gun makers were beginning to make metallic cartridge rifles. 1870 was a very pivotal time in gun manufacturing. This period was the key transition time between the muzzle loading black powder muskets of the Civil War and new methods and technology that allowed the birth of the modern-day metallic cartridge firearm. Much of these were rifles and handguns were loaded and fired a lot like they are today.

One of the more famous and long lasting guns available near the year 1870 was the Winchester lever action rifle seen in many movie westerns. There were many types of black powder revolvers used during this time also. Many of the more famous and widely used ones were made by Colt Manufacturing.

The year 1870 is also seen as pretty much the birth year of the "Wild, Wild West". This "Wild, Wild, West" period is traditionally thought of as the years 1870 to 1885. Interestingly though, the major cities of the East had more crime than those of the West and mid-West. During this period, only one city of the mid-West exceeded 5 shooting deaths in a single year and that was Dodge City, Kansas in 1876.

There were many advances in ammunition firing technology. The birth of the modern-day rimfire was in 1865. The end of the Civil War saw much of the federal forces with a variety of metallic cartridge breechloaders such as the Henry and Spencer rifles.  They were both in use in 1870 and used tubular magazines for their rimfire cartridges.  Fourteen years later in 1884, the first fully automatic machine gun was invented by Hiram Maxim.

All rifles and muskets in 1870 used black powder to fire the bullets. Modern smokeless gunpowder was not invented until at least 1884.

I wish I could have been more helpful, but I am not totally familiar with this era.  I hoped I helped you understand this important time in firearm development a little better.

"Because of previous experiences I am interested in self-defense techniques, and I am already positive that I will be buying a handgun at age 21.  I'd like to know your opinion on what the best model of firearm would be if you are looking to injure/shock someone without killing them. 9mm's and 45's seem so drastic, even without hollowpoint. What would you suggest?"

This is not an easy question to approach, but I will do my best with it.

A decision to purchase a handgun for self-defense should not be taken lightly, but is rather one of the more serious adult decisions that a person will make in their lives. Your decision to eventually purchase a handgun for self-defense should not be made this early, there is so much to consider.

There is a lot of misconception toward the use of self-defense and trying to "shock" a violent criminal back to his senses without killing him. Please allow me a few moments to touch on these misconceptions.

The focus of self-defense, whether it be martial arts, or the judicial use of deadly force is to avoid or stop an attack. That's it. Stopping an attack should always be the central point on which you should focus. Not injuring, shocking or killing.

With that said, let me tell you a little about something called "stopping power".

Stopping power is the ability of a firearm/ammunition combination to stop a violent attacker's advance. If someone is ever legally justified to use a firearm in deadly force to stop a violent assailant, they should always use the best and most capable firearm/ammunition they can safely handle.

Let me say again, the aim of self-defense with a firearm is to stop an attack already in progress!!

The lowest powered firearms in any category should never be considered for use in stopping the attack of a violent and possibly deadly criminal.

In my experience and in my opinion, the very lowest powered firearm that can be considered for a self-defense firearm is a handgun in .380 ACP. Preferably a .38 Special would be a better choice for this purpose.

The lowest powered handguns are the .25 ACP and the .22 Long Rifle. Both of which are unreliable in stopping an attacker in his tracks. In some cases, drugged up violent criminals have continued an attack after being shot multiple times with a .25 ACP.

The truth about the answer to your question is this:

If you are justified to utilize deadly force with a gun to stop an attack, you should always use the best and most effective firearm/ammunition combination that you can handle.

The short answer to your question would be this:

Your focus in self-defense should be to stop an attack with the best tools available. If the violent thug who perpetrates the attack dies as a result of your actions of pure self-defense, that is the attacker's problem and not yours.

But again, let me finish by saying that you are far too young to be considering these very serious decisions about your future choices. You should also take a Certified Course in Personal Protection by a qualified firearm instructor before you even consider purchasing a gun for your protection.

Why should adults with children ever own a gun?  And why do some adults misplace guns where children can get to them?

Adults with children have owned firearms since way before Christopher Columbus discovered America in the year 1492.  Guns have been around since just before the year 1300.  Guns are nothing new to families and homes.  Young children and guns have been together in the same homes for about 680 years, way back in the 1320's.

Years ago, in early America it was common for children as young as eight (8) to ten (10) years old, to go out hunting with their Dads and Uncles and bring home wild animals for food.  And to be taught how to use guns even younger than that.  Firearm ownership in early America was very common.  There were no grocery stores and only the rich people didn't have to go out and hunt for food.

Today, things have changed.  There are grocery stores everywhere and hunting is not a required family activity necessary for survival.  Today, shooting guns is mostly recreational and is a hobby for about eighty million (80,000,000) men and women across America.

Today, millions of Moms and Dads are concerned about violent crime and have guns in their homes to help protect themselves from bad people who may want to do harm to their families.

The decision to own a gun in a house with young children should be taken seriously and be treated with thoughtfulness, with safety being a primary consideration.

In early America nearly every home had at least one gun in it.  Today, almost half of all homes contain a gun.  This statistic means that if there is no gun in your house, it is likely that some of your neighbors have at least one of them in their homes.

You asked me why some adults misplace guns where kids can get at them, and that is a very good question.  I never advise adult gun owners with young children to hide loaded guns in their homes.  There are many products available that can keep guns ready, but safe from the curious hands of young children.

But more important than child-proofing guns, is to gun-proof the child.  In other words, show the child what a gun is and what it does, how to stay safe and what to do if they find a gun somewhere with no supervision.

Proper gun storage is something that has to be decided by each adult in the house.  Some kids as young as four or five can learn how to handle a gun properly, with the right training.  My child shot his first gun at four years old.

A police officer I know of also shot his first gun at four years old.  Teaching a child about gun safety and teaching a child how to shoot while still young, I believe should be a part of each child's upbringing.

Even if the child's parents don't have any guns in the house, it is very possible and probable that the child's friends or neighbors do have one in their house.  That is precisely why I made this page for kids and why I am answering this very question.

Let me leave you with a quotation that I use a lot that came from one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America:

"To preserve liberty it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them..."
Richard Henry Lee, Additional Letters From The Federal Farmer, 1788

Thank you for visiting and stay safe.

I loved your site, and I just wanted to ask you about the movies, like Bad Boys and Bad Boys 2 and everything, is that really what guns are like? I just had some scary dreams because of it...I know I sound stupid.

First, thank you for visiting my Web site and thank you for your question.

When it comes to firearms and young people, there are no questions that one might consider "stupid". Any question that you may have about guns is a good question. Especially if you ask someone who knows what they are talking about.

I have been a Certified Firearm Instructor for gun safety and education, for the last fifteen (15) years. I have received hundreds of questions from children from all over the world and yours is a good one. let me try to give you a good answer.

I have not seen the two movies that you have mentioned, however, I have a pretty good idea what the movie consisted of. They were probably about illegal drug related and gang related shootings and a storyline that revolves around that subject.

Guns were invented in the very early 1300's, somewhere between 1300 and 1320, is a good estimate.

Guns do not load themselves, aim at people themselves or fire bullets at people by themselves. Guns are merely devices made mostly of metal, that fire ammunition in a straight line.

That is all a gun does. A gun just fires a small piece of metal called a bullet in a straight line and that is all it does.

The person who holds and controls that firearm is the only person who controls when, where and why a bullet is fired.

The movie, entertainment and television industry constantly shows the improper, illegal, immoral and thoughtless use of guns everyday. They show these shootings and murders to us in the movies to shock us and scare us in order to make money from us.

It is my belief that the entertainment industry really should cut down on the violence and murder that they show us.  However, that will not happen until we make the decision to not go see these types of movies. How can we really blame the movie industry, when we throw billions of dollars at them every year...

Anyway, my family has always had guns around. My son shot his first gun when he was just five (5) years old. In the colonial days, boys were going out hunting with their families' guns before they were teenagers.

I wish I had the opportunity to teach all kids the proper way to be introduced to guns. Seeing violence perpetrated in the movies is not the right way to be introduced to the safe use of firearms.

Right, this is embarrassing, it's really simple but I can't find the info anywhere... what are all the little levers on the side of your average gun for? I know there's a safety, decocking lever, etc, but the gun in question has got six of'em...

Thank you for visiting and thanks for your question.  I just happened to be
at my computer right now and I will answer your question quickly.  Most kids
don't get an answer this quickly....    :-)

Well, let's see, six levers huh?  Well, you have a couple of them correct.
I don't know which model firearm you have there, but I will guess that it is
a semi-automatic centerfire handgun.

Some models have what is called ambidextrous safeties, so that the safety
can be activated from either side of the handgun, that might account for two
of them.

There may indeed be a decocking lever too, possibly even one on each side.

Next, there is a lever that will lock back the slide that runs back and
forth on the top of the handgun.  It is simply a device that will catch and
hold the slide in a rearward locked position and is usually located on the
left side of the gun.

Then, there is a magazine release.  This lever is used to unlock the
magazine from the magazine well in the bottom of the grip.  The magazine
release can also be ambidextrous, meaning there may be one on each side of
the handgun.

On a few newer models of semi-automatic handgun, there may be a lever that will change the action of the firearm a from traditional single action semi-automatic to double action only, where the recoiling slide will not cock the hammer.  In that case, the trigger would both cock and release the hammer, performing two actions that is why it's called double action.

So we have the:

Magazine Release
Slide Lock Back Lever
Safety or Safeties
Decocking Lever
Action Lever

A few of these levers may be on each side of the handgun too!!

Also keep in mind that some models of handguns also have more than one type
of safety on them.  In fact, some of the model 1911 World War II service
handguns have as many as four or five different types of safeties.  The model
you are speaking of could have a couple of different levers that can be
called safeties.

I hope this helped you answer your question.

How far does a bb gun fire and what gun would you recommend I have for a first gun if I have a three year old brother?

Thank you for visiting and thanks for your question.

The distance an air gun, bb gun or pellet gun can fire varies very much with
the model of gun you are using.  For instance, a single pump .177 cal, $30
air gun with a pellet, can fire a few hundred feet.  While a .22 cal CO2
fired rifle used for serious competition can fire probably a half mile or
more.

As for my advice on a first gun, I don't think my thoughts have much bearing
on the fact that you have a three year old brother.  A first gun is a very
serious decision, that should never be taken lightly.  If you want something
that he will be able to shoot in a few years, then a small caliber (.22LR)
bolt action rifle would be great.

However, if you have decided that it is time to get a first real firearm, I
have a couple of recommendations.  I think a rifle or shotgun that is simple
to use, of very good quality and not too powerful, would be ideal.

Something like a single shot, break open action, 20 Gauge shotgun, would be
a good choice for a first shotgun.  While a quality .22 Long Rifle cal
rifle, preferably with a bolt-action would be a good choice for a first
rifle.

If you are confident with and familiar with how to use a semi-automatic
rifle, I heartily recommend a Ruger 10-.22.  Which is a 10-shot
semi-automatic rifle of high quality and low cost.  Otherwise, I would
generally try to stick with a well known American rifle or shotgun from
companies like Sturm-Ruger, Winchester, Remington, Mossberg or a few others.

Can you give me some facts about gun powder?

Good question.

Today, modern smokeless gun powder is made from things like nitro-glycerin and nitrocellulose.

Did Samuel Colt make the first revolver ever? Also is there any interesting stories on Samuel Colt because I am doing a history paper on him and I really need to find an interesting story about him.

Thank you for visiting my Web site at www.SaveTheGuns.com. I especially want to thank you for your question.

Samuel Colt did indeed patent the very first revolver on February 25, 1836 in America, but a year earlier in 1835, it was patented in Europe.

As far as helping you out with your history paper, let me give you the following five (5) links to consider.

How many kids a year get killed by guns in America?

This question came from a ten year old girl who did not leave an e-mail address or an e-mail address of a parent.  So I will answer the question here, because I think it's very important for kids to understand.

First of all, we have to rephrase the question because guns don't kill anything.  Bad people sometimes use guns to commit a crime with.  Sometimes people mishandle a loaded gun and that causes a death.  But guns do not cause anything.  Guns are an inanimate object.  Guns are merely mechanical devices that discharge ammunition.  The person operating the gun does everything else.  The operator chooses where the bullet goes and when it gets fired.

Anyway, now that I've straightened that out, let's take a look at the year 2001.

In 2001, there were a total of 2,937 gun related deaths from all causes and all children ages 0 to 19.

There were 182 deaths due to accidents.  928 kids killed themselves on purpose due to suicide.  1771 kids were killed by murderers.  26 of them were killed by police or by homeowners because the kids broke into a house to rob it, committed a crime or something like that.  Another 30 kids were shot dead in 2001 with the source of the death being undetermined.

It is important for you to know that this rate of death for young people is quite low.  It is about the lowest it has been in about thirty (30) years.

What is the difference between a shotgun, a handgun, and a pistol?

Thank you very much for visiting me on the Web at www.SaveTheGuns.com.  Thank you especially for your interest and your question.

There are three different kinds of guns available to the general public.  The shotgun, handgun and rifle.

The term "handgun" can refer to a pistol or a revolver.  The generally accepted definition of a pistol, is a handgun, whose action is either semi-automatic or fully automatic and uses a spring loaded magazine to supply the handgun with ammunition.  The other type of handgun is called a revolver.  The revolver uses a revolving cylinder which has holes in it to accept the ammunition.  Those are the two major different kinds of handguns.  There is actually a third kind of handgun, which is called a derringer.  A derringer is usually a double barreled handgun with one ammunition cartridge inserted into the breech end of each barrel.  Derringers are usually only two-shot handguns.

Another major type of firearm is the shotgun.  The shotgun is the oldest and first type of firearm ever made.  It is estimated to have been first made before the year 1300.  The major difference between a shotgun and a rifle is the type of ammunition it shoots.

The shotgun normally shoots a plastic shelled cartridge, which is full of small balls of lead or steel, called "shot".  It is designed to fire multiple projectiles of lead or steel at the same time and is mainly used for hunting game animals for food.

The rifle shoots a single bullet like a handgun does, but the rifle is shot from the shoulder instead of just with the hands.  The rifle also has spiral grooves down the barrel to make the bullet spin on it's way to the target.  Rifling is very similar to how a quarterback spins a football to make it fly straighter and stay on target.  The rifle's cartridge case is normally made of brass.  It is similar to handgun ammunition, but is usually larger and more powerful.

I hope that gives you a better idea of the differences between the different kinds of guns available and their appropriate terms.
